“My Accidentally Fun Summer” is a fun story to read. The main character, thirteen-year old Calliope Thornton, is sent to summer camp against her wishes. (She thinks she’s not very good at making friends!) Not only does Callie meet a colorful group of girls in her bunk, but she uncovers a real mystery that she is determined to solve. There are so many wonderful scenes to pick from; it’s so hard to choose! However, I decided to go with the moment Callie uncovers the mystery and we get to know a little more about the characters Sheila and Charlie.
“What on earth are you doing?” Charlie asked, bending down herself.
“There's something under the dirt.” Callie grunted as she tried to dig out the hard dirt.
“Sheila would catch a fit if she saw your nails right now,” Charlie smirked as she crossed her arms.
“Actually,” Sheila said as she finally got up and started shaking leaves out of her big hair, “in some countries, dirt is very good for exfoliation, most specifically for the nail beds.”
Charlie ignored Sheila and looked at the ground, “You're right. I see it too.” She began to help Callie.
“You know, Mr. Mendel is probably looking for us.” Sheila continued to try and dust off every speck of dirt. “And besides, we fell down a tiny hill,” Sheila justified, with her nose in the air. “It won't do to look as though we've fallen into a treacherous abyss.” She looked down at her grass stained pink shorts and let out a whimper.
Callie and Charlie finally got to the bottom and lifted out a small red box. It looked very old, as if it were buried in the ground for a number of years. There were patterns of gold leaves all over it, with a gold-looking opening snap. Of course, the colors were faded. Callie tried to guess how long it had been in the ground.
“What are you waiting for? Open it,” Charlie said with excited curiosity as Callie stared at the box, dumbfounded.
“Oh right.” Callie's eyes furrowed as she opened the box carefully.
“You guys are taking a mighty long time,” Sheila huffed. “What did you find anyway?” Sheila stomped over and looked on.
Callie pulled out a flattened purple-pinkish wild flower and handed it to Charlie. She then pulled out a faded Polaroid picture. It was an obvious picture of a girl with wild brown hair, but the face had faded with time.
Charlie put her head next to Callie's and looked at the picture, “She's wearing camp clothes.”
Callie looked hard, “It looks like an eighties hairstyle.”
Sheila bent down, “Let me see that,” She snatched the picture from Callie's hand and held it up to her own face, “Her hair doesn't look all that great.”
“It's better than yours,” Charlie muttered.
“What was that?” Sheila asked, knowing Charlie was just being snarky again.
Callie snatched the picture back and looked at the back of it. “198...the rest is faded.” She looked back into the box, “Look one more thing. A note.” She opened the tiny piece of torn paper and read, “'The other half of my heart is here.'” She looked up curiously, then hesitated, “Do you think this has anything to do with the missing girl?”
Charlie and Sheila both groaned. “Callie, not you. Of all the people to get sucked into that story, not you.” Charlie stood up and crossed her arms.
Callie decided at that moment not to tell them about the probable ghost she saw running through that very trail.
“I am SO done!” Sheila sniffed. “My feet are swollen from this horrid hike. I'm all dirty from playing Secret Spy with you two,” she sniffed back a tear and held a sob, “And my vintage shorts-”
“Ohhhh,” Charlie groaned. “Listening to this is worse than falling.”
Thank you for sharing this scene. So, why do you like being an author?
It truly is an outlet for the imagination; to unlock a new world and create new characters. I imagine what trouble they get into and how they would get out of it. It’s rewarding when you complete a story. Such a labor of love!
Who’s your favorite author of classic literature?
I’ve just begun reading Jane Eyre. I know nothing really about the plot, just the fact that she’s a governess who falls in love with her employer. I’ve finished the part about her childhood and she’s just met Mr. Rochester. So far I have enjoyed Charlotte Brontë’s descriptions of the environment, the people around Jane. I already feel for Jane and find myself rooting for her. I love that, I cannot wait to finish the story, she’s got me hooked.
I so enjoy reading a book that truly captures my attention and I can't wait to read more. What was the happiest moment in your childhood?
Just like picking a favorite scene out of my book, it’s harder to pick the happiest moment in my childhood. I’ll have to pick out the time I was walking home from school, in the first grade. I literally lived a few houses away from the school. On the ground I saw caterpillars everywhere. I didn’t connect what they were, just that they were everywhere and they were bugs! I ran home screaming and crying and my mom and dad didn’t rush me for a long explanation. They both just took me in their arms and held me and said they loved me. I felt so loved and cherished in that moment of pure fear in my young eyes.
“Sofia’s Magical World” is Book 2 in the Camp Eerie series! Sofia is a popular character from the first book. We find out more about her “magical world” as she describes briefly in “My Accidentally Fun Summer”. The rest of the girls from the bunk fly to her home country and join her during winter break. Suddenly Sofia, her protector Sir Lucas and her friends from Camp Eerie have to save her family from a curse an estranged Aunt placed on the kingdom. This is an adventure of a lifetime!
