Why did you become a writer…was it a dream of yours since you were younger or did the desire to write happen later in your life?
My story is different from many writers; I didn’t grow up with the aspiration to become a professional writer. When God spoke to my heart about writing, I knew He wanted me to write inspirational books books that encouraged, motivated and led readers toward a closer walk with Him. With that being my vision, my writing career began.
On May 24, 2008, my first non-fiction inspirational book That Was Then, This Is Now: This Broken Vessel Restored was released, which achieved national recognition by being awarded a finalist in the 2009 Next Generation Indie Book Award.
What was the inspiration for your latest work of non-fiction?
I am a Christian writer and I always want to share my faith and spiritual beliefs through the written word.
What was the most interesting research you had to do for any of your books?
Careful thought, research and consideration went into deciding which scriptures to reference in Completely Whole. Because there are so many passages of scriptures for every thing we go through in life I decided to use those that were personal to me. Those scriptures are the ones that help me overcome and finally leading me to spiritual victory.
Are you currently working on any new book projects?
I’m currently working on two projects for 2011. Victorious Living for Moms, my second anthology, will be released in May 2011, right in time for Mother’s Day and the release of my forth book, For Such a Time as This.
Do you have any advice for beginning writers on how to write a book?
Just do it. There is no step by step guide other than start writing. Find out what your passionate about and if you
believe you have something to say than by all means share it. There are people who will read your work.
Do you have any advice for them regarding promoting that book once published?
One of the things I’ve done was to hire a publicist, this takes some of the load of marketing off me as a writer. I’m developing a newsletter to send to those in my network so I’m constantly collecting email addresses. And finally the internet has plenty of places to research and network with other social groups.
If you cannot hire someone to assist you, there are many places to market your book for little or no money. Devote time, energy and money into searching ways to market and promote your book. Another idea is to write articles. This is a sure way for people to get familiar with who you are and your writing style. Published articles will lead readers to your website or blog where they will be able to purchase copies of your books.
How did you find your publisher?
With my first book That Was Then, This Is Now (May 2008) I searched the internet for Christian publishing companies and found Tate Publishing. I self published my latest book Completely Whole.
What was your journey to publication like?
In Jan 2007, my writing journey began while going through a personal transition in my life. I realized that God was given me a story to share with those who would be facing some of the same challenges I was going through. I believed I had an inspiriting and encouraging story of restoration, healing and deliverance that needed to be share with the world. I have continued writing books to edify, encourage and promote spiritual growth.
How have your friends and family received your career as an author? Are they supportive?
People that I grew up with are pleasantly surprised and proud. This includes my family and friends. To have someone write a book and have it published is one of the greatest accomplishments one can achieve. They show their support by purchasing copies of all my books J
