“I will,” Anastasia responded.
“I thought you would,” David answered. “Anyone else interested?”
“I’ll join you,” Alexander said.
David scooped his niece up and she exclaimed, “Uncle David, wait, I didn’t finish my cake yet.”
“I’ll get it,” Alexander said, following them out of the room.
Left alone with Sebastian, Sophie remarked, “That was smooth.”
“So it wasn’t your plan for us to be alone again so you can continue with our conversation?”
“No, it wasn’t, but now that you suggest it, this is an opportune time.”
“Then I guess I’ll be joining them for the movie.”
Sebastian stood up. “Would you mind playing for me?”
“The piano, I mean.”
She thought for a minute and then said, “Lead the way.” She walked after him and he led her to the parlor. She entered the room with trepidation at being alone with Sebastian. She longed to spend time with him yet feared the feelings he evoked inside her. He pulled the bench out and she said, “Thank you.” His nearness affected her and she moved away suddenly. She sat down and began to play, hoping he moved to the divan across the room, but he stayed by the bench.
“You can sit over there, you know,” she said.
“But the sound is better over here.”
She looked up at him and continued playing. “You’re making me nervous.”
“What if I move to the other end of the bench?”
She laughed. “You’re very persistent.”
“Yes, so I’ve been told.”
She turned back to the keys and closed her eyes, very much in her element. She played a song she learned in her childhood and soon she began humming quietly.
Sebastian interrupted her focus. “I enjoy listening to you play.”
“Did you just move closer?’
“You’re not a good liar.”
“Hmmm, I guess not.” He touched her arm and said, “Please keep playing.”
She obliged and listened as he said, “Ana seems to be doing very well. Thank you for all of your hard work with her.”
“You’re welcome. I love teaching. It doesn’t even seem like work to me.”
“Well, that definitely shows.”
She stopped playing and looked at him. “Anastasia is ready for school, you know.”
“Yes. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”
Sophie wondered why he closed that subject so abruptly, but Anastasia halted any further rumination when she said, “Papa, Miss Sophie, will you come to watch the movie? Please…”
“Sure,” Sebastian said as he stood up.
Relieved to put some distance between them, Sophie stood up also and said, “I’d love to,” as she walked towards her young student. She realized no future existed for her and this wonderful man, so his nearness felt like pure torture when she only wanted his arms to embrace her and keep her safe.
I hope this Thanksgiving will be a wonderful time for you and your own family...that you'll be blessed and know the true meaning of that spirit of Thanksgiving. I'm trying to re-learn that every day.
So, what are you thankful for today?
